Project Description

This 700-square-meter rooftop garden provides a tranquil setting for sunbathing, relaxation, and evening gatherings beneath the canopy of large willow trees, offering residents a welcome retreat from the intensity of urban life.

Our contribution focused mainly on the planting design, landscape furniture, and construction supervision. The objective was to strengthen the sense of enclosure and create a comfortable, shaded environment that would enhance the garden’s atmosphere of privacy and calm.

Compared to the ground-level landscape, the rooftop offered greater planting flexibility due to more favorable light conditions. However, the pre-existing layout imposed certain limitations on the extent of possible modifications. To support the long-term growth and health of the willow trees—which are intended to become the defining feature of the rooftop garden—we redesigned and raised the planting beds to provide adequate soil volume and root space.

Under the willow’s shade, the rooftop opens into quiet seating corners.

A rooftop garden shaped by willow shade.

Vertical bamboo planting introduces texture, movement, and year-round greenery to the terrace.

A restrained planting palette centered on pampas grass creates a lightweight, atmospheric landscape defined by movement, light, and seasonal change.

Plant Palette:

  • Pampas Grass (Cortaderia selloana)

A lush, low-maintenance planting scheme combining evergreen structure with dramatic seasonal foliage for year-round visual impact.

Plant Palette:

  • Foreground mass planting: Canna lily (Canna spp.) with bronze/burgundy foliage.
  • Background hedge: Ficus microcarpa, Clusia, a dense evergreen screening shrub.
  • Left background small tree: Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) with red foliage.
  • Low green foreground carpet: Juniperus, Asparagus fern, a fine-textured groundcover.
